Good for beginners & great value, but flawed  |
DarkBASIC Professional is an ideal package for beginners, as it massively simplifies the process of creating 3d games. The editor has a smart XP interface which is very simple and thus easy to learn. DarkBASIC provides a complete game engine which allows you to get good results easily and quickly. For example , you just type in "Load Object" instead of hundreds of lines of C++ code. Commands are provided to easily rotate, position and apply special effects to objects within a 3D world, meaning that anyone with GCSE level maths could use it.It is a programming language though, not click and create, so it does still take quite a while to produce a complete game (a few weeks to a few months). For the price, DarkBASIC is excellent value, however it is deeply flawed. The first problem is bugs and compatibility. DarkBASIC Professional is easily the most buggy peace of software I have ever used. Commands often produce incorrect results, return the wrong values etc. If something fails to load for some reason, rather than silently failing as in Blitz3D - your whole program stops. And there is nothing you can do about it. The debugger crashes left, right and center, and the editor overwrites source code.

The help is rubbish. You need to buy other expensive programs on the web to complete what you want to do. Unless your a geek do not bother.

Dark basic Pro is a superb update to original version(which i also own) While it is still being devloped and patched it is easily the best thing i have you used to make good 3d games. Dont let the name fool you though, you can make your games and applications as complex or as simple as you want, even if you use other languages to make games dark basic is superb for developing ideas quickly. The support you can get through the online forums is very good aswell, you can get help on any aspect of programming in dark basic from top programmers, some of who have even made games that they have sold. If however this is your first experience with programming i would recommend buying the original version as opposed to the pro one as you will find it easier to get to grips with initially, it is also cheaper!
